What Is Your Sexual Essence, and Why It’s the Key to Sexual Sovereignty

Your sexuality is the most potent creative energy you have access to, and it carries your essence. If that sentence sounds abstract, stay with me, because by the end of this article, I want it to feel like the most practical thing you've read all week.

What Do I Mean by "Essence"?

Your essence is the bright light in you that shines unapologetically. It's the part of you that makes choices from love rather than fear. The part that trusts, that knows without a shadow of a doubt that everything coming to you is for your growth and evolution, even when it doesn't feel that way in the moment.

When your essence is alive and intact, your sexual sovereignty is alive and well too, actively supporting you in creating anything your heart desires. These two things, essence and sovereignty, aren't separate. One flows directly from the other.

What Sexual Sovereignty Actually Means

Sexual sovereignty isn't primarily about sex itself, though sex is certainly part of it. It's about authority, the authority to make choices in your life that are genuinely right for you, regardless of what anyone else wants for you or from you.

Think about how many decisions in your life, big and small, get quietly filtered through other people's expectations before you even realize you're doing it. What will they think? Is this too much? Should I want this? Sexual sovereignty is the dismantling of that filter. It's the return to a simple, radical question: what do I actually want, and am I willing to claim it?

What Happens When Your Essence Goes Untended

Here's the part most people don't expect: when your sexual essence isn't nurtured and tended to, it doesn't just affect your sex life. It shows up everywhere.

You'll likely experience burnout, resentment, and a kind of quiet, persistent self-doubt that's hard to pin to any one cause. And these internal experiences don't stay internal, they reflect outward, showing up as dissatisfaction in love, in relationships, in intimacy, and often in areas of life that seem completely unrelated to sexuality at first glance. Your career. Your friendships. Your sense of purpose.

This is because your sexual essence isn't a separate compartment of your life. It's closer to a root system, quietly feeding everything else. When the root is neglected, the effects show up in the branches, even the branches that seem far away from the root itself.

Why This Gets Overlooked So Often

Most of us were never taught to think about sexuality this way. We were taught, explicitly or implicitly, that sexuality is either purely physical (a biological function to manage) or something to feel ashamed of (a private, slightly dangerous topic). Rarely were we taught that our sexual energy is actually a creative force, one directly connected to confidence, decision-making, and our capacity to build the life we actually want.

In Taoist tradition, this creative sexual energy is called jing chi, considered the most potent and primordial form of life force available to a human being. Rather than being something to spend unconsciously or suppress out of shame, it's meant to be understood, cultivated, and consciously directed, as medicine, as creative fuel, as the literal energetic root of your vitality.

The More Authentic You're Willing to Be, the More Life Responds

Here's something I've witnessed again and again in my practice, and in my own life: the more authentic you're willing to be on your journey toward sexual sovereignty, the more life shows up to reward you with outcomes beyond what you thought possible.

This isn't magical thinking. When you stop spending your energy managing shame, performing a version of yourself you think others want, and suppressing your actual desires, that energy becomes available for something else entirely: creativity, confidence, clarity, connection. People notice when someone is genuinely, unapologetically themselves. Opportunities, relationships, and experiences tend to move differently around a person operating from that kind of alignment.

How to Begin Reclaiming Your Sexual Essence

Reclaiming your essence doesn't require a dramatic overhaul of your life. It starts with small, consistent acts of honesty with yourself:

  • Noticing where you're making choices from fear rather than love, and gently questioning those patterns rather than judging yourself for them
  • Getting curious about your own actual desires, separate from what you think you should want
  • Learning to work consciously with your own sexual energy, rather than either suppressing it or expending it unconsciously
  • Finding safe, supportive spaces to explore this work without shame or judgment, since so much of this territory has historically been navigated in isolation and secrecy

You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone

If this resonates, and you're ready to actually begin working with your own sexual essence rather than just reading about it, this is exactly the territory I guide women through in The Jade Egg Remedy, a seven-week initiation into one of the oldest practices in the Taoist tradition, designed to awaken your erotic potential and help you reclaim your body as a source of power, not shame.
